James qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1998 and completed the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia whilst working in mixed practice in 2004. Having been passionate about managing pain from early in his career, in 2012 he was awarded a Masters degree by Bristol University for research into peri-operative pain management in dogs and cats.

James continued to work as a researcher in the field of pain management at Bristol University for the next 4 years, studying both acute peri-operative pain and chronic pain associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis. In 2016 he was adopted as a de facto diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, in recognition of his contribution to the field of animal welfare.
