Neurosurgeon Simon Bertram has joined the expert team at the highly-respected Cave Veterinary Specialists, in Wellington, Somerset.

Simon, 32, will work alongside leading EBVS and RCVS-recognised specialists in veterinary neurology Tom Cardy and Fran Taylor-Brown in Cave’s neurology department, which boasts an on-site 1.5Tesla MRI scanner and 16-slice CT scanner, along with an on-site laboratory, electrophysiology unit and spacious modern operating theatres with digital access to patients’ imaging studies.

Simon said: “My main focus is on neurosurgery and spinal surgery for patients which often come to us with congenital, breed-specific conditions.

“At Cave, one of our aims is to raise awareness among both owners and referring vets of these often-complex conditions.

“We especially want to help educate owners to be aware of the clinical signs of conditions in breeds such as French bulldogs, which often go under-diagnosed as people think certain symptoms are ‘normal’ for those breeds.”

Tom Cardy, neurology lead and acting co-clinical director at Cave, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Simon to our specialist team.

“All our veterinary surgeons are either recognised as specialists by governing professional bodies in Britain and Europe, or have further training in their specialist field. Simon is no different and we’re delighted he has brought his expertise to Cave.”

Simon, who graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, is already enjoying life at Cave, which is part of the UK-wide Linnaeus Group, and appreciating the switch from the capital to the West Country.

It’s also a fabulous location for Simon to enjoy his favourite pastimes – hiking, kayaking, running, sea fishing and enjoying the great outdoors with his 10-year-old Vizsla, Milo, by his side.
